Medeor Hospital, A Unique COVID-19 Health Care Facility

It has been one month since the Gurugram’s first private dedicated COVID-19 hospital, Medeor Hospital Manesar opened its doors to save lives of COVID patients. This 120-bed hospital is a unique example of the collaboration from various stakeholders of the society i.e. hospital groups, private corporations, civil society, Gurgaon administration, all coming together and bringing this hospital into operation in a very short time.

On June 11, 2020, Medeor Hospital Manesar completed one month of its operation having successfully treated and discharged 80 patients, many of these being critical cases with pre-exiting co-morbidities. With over 70 patients undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the hospital has a total patient count of 150+ on this day.

Conceptualization of the project

The leaders from four hospital chains, Dr. Naresh Trehan (Chairman and MD, Medanta the Medicity), Dr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi (CEO, Fortis Healthcare), Dr. Devlina Chakravarty (MD & CEO, Artemis Hospitals) and
Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil (Chairman & MD, VPS Healthcare), came together to conceptualize the idea of this unique hospital. Much before coronavirus had spread its impact across the city, these visionary leaders had met with Haryana Chief Minister Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar in March 2020 to propose Medeor Hospital to be re-purposed as a dedicated COVID-19 Hospital for the Gurugram district.

As slowly we saw the spike in COVID-19 cases in Gurgaon, this hospital facility was prepared to offer highest quality of COVID-19 treatment to patients from all walks of life. This added the much needed supplement to the limited bed capacity at the district government medical facilities at Civil Hospital and ESIC Hospital.

Hospital Set-up in 7 weeks

With approvals and go-ahead from Haryana Administration, the partner hospital teams rapidly came together to revamp and operationalise the facility. Medeor was set to provide the requisite infrastructure for best health care for COVID patients. Upgrades to infection control system and sewage plants were done. Medical staff consisting of expert doctors, nurses and support teams along with equipment and consumables was pooled in by Medanta, Fortis and Artemis to kick-start the hospital.

The key administrative teams that worked tirelessly to make this possible at earliest possible were lead by Mr. Pankaj Sahni (CEO, Medanta), Mr. Nihaj Mohammed (COO, VPS Healthcare India), Dr. Sushila Kataria (Senior Director, Internal Medicine, Medanta), Dr. Tamorish Kole (Medical Director, Medeor Hospital), Dr. Ritu Garg (Head – Clinical Talent Management, Fortis Gurgaon) and Dr. Anjali Kaul (Medical Superintendent, Artemis Hospital). They worked relentlessly to accomplish the mammoth task of bringing together four different hospital chains to setup and jointly run Gurgaon’s first private dedicated COVID-19 hospital.

Parallel to hospital getting ready, the “Gurgaon COVID-19 Volunteers Group”, a group formed by few CEOs from leading corporations with extensive presence in Gurgaon, initiated a large fund-raising campaign for the hospital. The group included Mr. Pramod Bhasin (Founder, Genpact & Chairman, Clix Capital), Mr. Deep Kalra (Founder CEO, MakeMyTrip), Mr. Sumant Sinha (Chairman and MD, ReNew Power) and Ms. Taab Siddiqi (Co-founder, Harvest Gold Industries), among others. Besides their own substantial commitment of funds to the project, the group reached out to colleagues and friends across the country to pool funds for the initiative. They also partnered with IamGurgaon, a leading NGO in Gurugram led by Ms. Latika Thukral, for raising and managing the funds.

Inauguration and Expansion

In an unbelievable short span of just 7 weeks of initiating the project, the hospital was inaugurated on a hot sunny morning on May 11, 2020 by Sh. Ashok Sangwan, IAS (Commissioner, Gurugram). Many other senior officials of the Gurgaon administration, including Sh. V.S. Kundu, IAS (Commissioner, GMDA, Gurugram); Sh. Rajeev Arora, IAS (Additional Chief Secretary, Health Department, Haryana); Sh. Amit Khatri, IAS (Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram) and Sh. Vinay Pratap Singh, IAS, (Commissioner, MCG, Gurugram), were present at the inauguration.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Naresh Trehan said:
“This is not commercial. We are doing it from the goodness of our hearts. I am happy because Medanta, Fortis and Artemis, we are competitors, but we could come on the same platform during this time”

The Hospital began its operations with patient admission only through referral by the Civil Hospital Gurugram. In few days, 50 beds were filled up with COVID cases. Many of these patients were in critical conditions having severe symptoms and co-morbidities and were successfully treated at Medeor.  These patients were from all walks of life including many from Ayushman Bharat, economically weaker sections, CGHS and other government schemes, private insurance, cash-paying etc.

With the district opening to businesses and economic activity, Gurugram witnessed the sudden surge in COVID-19 cases from end of May. The hospital teams came together once again and ramped up the hospital’s capacity to 120 beds within 3 weeks. Now the hospital has started accepting patients directly as well.
